Internal Conflicts in Works of Thucydides and Machiavelli
Abstract:
Hybrid threats are considered among the most serious risks that Western societies currently face. The aim of actors using such threats is to influence decision-making processes, and in order to do so they use a rich spectrum of methods to instigate conflict in society, seeking to undermine trust in institutions, abet radicalisation, and so on. Activities aimed at creating internal conflict, and the prevention of such activities, are not, of course, a new phenomenon; they differ only in their extent, intensity and the techniques used. The aim of this paper is to investigate how classic strategists – Thucydides and Machiavelli – described in their works how internal conflict is fomented among the enemy and how it can be prevented. The paper describes and analyses various ways of instigating and mitigating internal conflict as noted in their works, and assesses their relevance for the current debate.- Internal Conflicts in Works of Thucydides and Machiavelli (2673 Downloads)
Šedo Jakub
Jakub Šedo, PhD., born in 1977, graduated at Masaryk university in 2001 and 2006 (Ph.D.). Currently he works as an assistant professor at the Department of Political Science of the Faculty Social Studies at the Masaryk University. In his research he focuses on the Political Systems and Military History. He is author or co-author of several monographs and research articles.

Str. 85 Vnitřní konflikty v dílech Thúcydida a Machiavelliho

Obsáhlý článek v anglickém jazyce řeší na 17 stránkách problematiku vnitřních konfliktů. Autor volil díla klasických stratégů jako podklad pro hlubší rozbor. Článek je dobře napsán, logicky uspořádán. Pro čtenáře by mohlo být dobré, aby měl trochu lepší znalosti angličtiny, než má začátečník. Hodnocení článku může být kladné, přesto mi připadá text dosti rozvláčný.
Thucydides (Th) řeší problematiku v návaznosti na Pelopponeské války, Machiavelli (Ma) řeší totéž v severní Itálii. Mají společný nebo stejný náhled na problémy vnitřních konfliktů. Uvádí cíle, prostředky, úlohu podvratných činností, peněz, vojenské síly, vliv na názory lidí, místo a úlohu diplomacie.
Práce obou stratégů lze navázat na současné hybridní válčení.
